Purpose: This study aimed to identify the levels of quality of life(QOL) and its correlates across life cycles in 1,019 city-dwelling adults(426 young adults; 489 middle-aged adults; 104 older adults) in a metropolitan city in Korea.
Methods: QOL and depression symptoms were assessed by the brief version of the World Health Organization QOL and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale(CESD). To identify independent correlation of QOL, we performed a multiple linear regression analysis.
Results: Total QOL(QOLT) differed by life cycle(p=.001), especially showing a lower score in middle-aged adults than in the young adults(11.2¡¾1.8 versus 11.6¡¾1.8, p<.05). Depression symptoms were an independent correlate across all three life cycles in four domains of QOL. Among young adults, a lower education level was an independent correlate of lower QOLT; among middle-aged adults, having a job was an independent correlate of lower QOLT. However, older adults had no independent correlate other than depression symptoms.
Conclusion: Depression symptoms were the single independent correlate of QOLT across life cycles. Other correlate were life cycle-specific. Therefore, a life cycle-specific community-based program with strategies for reducing the burden of depression will be needed for improving the QOL of city-dwelling adults.
